北京建築師王碩，並不贊同對胡同“生物標本”式的隔絕保護。“談到胡同和四合院的時候，人們經常討論的是它的保護和拆除。當某個事物變成被保護對象的時候，它就失去了它的生命，失去了在現實中存活的理由。但是胡同這個東西，從它誕生以來一直持續不斷地在變，不斷地自我更新。”

西海邊的院子，是王碩對北京胡同在保護與拆除之間的改造嘗試。他提倡，胡同應該像⽣物細胞一樣，通過有機更新讓其進化。胡同裏的建築要“接地氣”，與自然、與社區保持良好的關系。在這裏，你可以在辦公室工作，在茶室喝茶，在院子裏曬太陽，和胡同的鄰居聊天，還能去西海邊散散步。

王碩喜歡德國哲學家瓦爾特·本雅明用來形容藝術品的一個詞語——“光韻（Aura）”，它代表著藝術品獨一無二卻神秘莫測的氣質。他認爲，北京胡同文化的真正內涵就在于某種“光韻”。在西海邊的院子裏，感受著窗外微振的水波和樹枝搖擺的“光韻”時，是對北京胡同絕無僅有的空間氣質的體驗。
